What we have learned printing cards with hundreds of names
- A spreadsheet is not bureaucracy, it is error prevention. Transcribing names from messages into a template is where mistakes enter a job like this, and a misspelt name on a school ID card is noticed by exactly one child, who minds a great deal.
- Name the photograph files to match the ID numbers before sending. A folder of files called IMG_2847 has to be matched to names by eye, which on four hundred records takes most of a day and is the slowest part of the whole job.
- Punch the hole at the top centre, not the corner. A corner punched card hangs at an angle and the photograph faces sideways, which defeats the point of wearing it.
- Order about five percent spare. Cards get lost in the first fortnight, always, and a reprint of three cards costs nearly as much as thirty because the setup is paid again.
